Don Powell interview, Heidenheimer Zeitung 4.3.2010

Glam rockers to open new music venues

Released: Monday March 8, 2010

Wolverhampton's newest music venues will be officially unveiled later this week – by members of a Black Country glam rock band which has given its name to one of them.

Dave Hill and Don Powell of Slade will cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the Slade Rooms and Little Civic, two brand new nightspots in one building.

The event on Thursday March 11, 2010 will also mark the launch of a unique partnership between Wolverhampton City Council, the National Skills Academy and the City of Wolverhampton College, which will see the council's world-class entertainment venues used to train music industry apprentices.

Just come from suhl. what's new. as the first middle of the road appeared, agree lorna bannon good and nice hookup. mud2 were second with well-known songs, then, middle and high point, slade. half in the song "jane" had dave repleace his guitar and so no dave was there. it something new but not necessarily better. john sang the song everyday, very nice. don, as always, be working hard on his drums and at times the hair of mal becomes always longer. hanne was also there as travel companion. fourth were sailor, they made the classic rock night once more gently with nice show. it was sweet as the last of the series, this time without the founding member andy scott, because he was ill. a young man entered, with long hair were accustomed to the bottom and much more action than we put out by this. the sound of his guitar was rocking, his name I unfortunately do not know. the audience, well I guess no more than 1000, but judge from the first row, where I am always bad. this was now my 37th slade-gig. My endeavor is so, until next year, where slade is celebrating next year 45 years stage anniversary, that I could also counting my 45th experience slade-gig, so I have still much before. here is a small selection of pictures, slade in suhl. I do not think that will be published many pictures, since there were no photographers, I havn`t seen.

Providence 1975 [Dan Lampinski Recording, 1CD]

Live at the Providence Civic Center, Providence, RI, October 25, 1975. Very good audience recording.

Dave Jewell played this album last night on his radio-show.

Hard to imagine that Slade were touted, at one time, as the next Beatles. After all, they were the first act to have three singles enter at No. 1 on the British charts. They were Britain’s top band of 1972-74 and were regulars on Top Of The Pops. But casual listeners will probably remember them as glam rockers whose song titles were often misspelt.

By 1975, even if they were not the hit-making machine they once were, on stage, they were still energy-charged rockers and could easily hold and whip up the crowd, as the Providence concert showed.

As ethiessen1, who created the artwork, said: “I hadn’t listened to this band since back in junior high school, and then the attraction was primarily their outlandish stage attire combined with their instinct for good, well constructed anthemic rock n roll with just a hint of pop. If you’ve not heard this band before… ignore the glam looking costumes and prepare to be blown away by relatively simple but well arranged and well performed rockers. Think of a British (where these guys were major stars) version of Kiss  but with a little more flair and a lot less makeup…”

Thanks to djscomics for sharing the lossless tracks on the Dime site. Above all, thanks to Dan Lampinski, Carl Morstadt (who mastered the tracks), Kev, ethiessen1 and the rest of the Lampinski crew.

Slade, Status Quo, Lindisfarne and Caravan 1973
This was Status Quo’s first trek to Australia and New Zealand. It would become a regular trip during the 1970s but on this, their first tour, Quo played as support band to the UK glam rockers ‘Slade’. Quo would return to Australia within the year. The support act was Blackfeather.

Jands sound system was severly tested by Slade’s operator who took one look at the mixer and said “I don’t use the meters (or any of the other controls) just push all the faders to the top”. After the first show the DBX160 limiters were moved from the mix position to backstage and set to protect the speaker system!

Slade set to headline at arts festival

Two former members of iconic 70s rock band Slade are to headline at Shifnal’s first ever Arts and Music Festival this autumn.

Dave Hill and Don Powell, who continue to perform under the name Slade, have been confirmed at the festival which takes place from September 18 to the 25.

Festival committee chairman Tony Stringfellow, told the Journal that he knows flamboyant guitarist Dave Hill which helped when booking the band.

Mr Stringfellow said he thought it was highly likely that the group, which now consists of Dave, Don, John Berry and Mal McNulty, would perform Slade’s monster hit Merry Xmas Everybody.

He said: “We have confirmed Slade for the Saturday night – they are booked.

Mr Stringfellow said: “We are looking for more sponsorship. The festival will cost around £20,000 to put the festival on in reality. We will be getting ticket sales but whatever we make will go for next year.”

Other plans for the festival include an opening procession, storytelling, workshops and much more. And a Shifnal talent contest is also planned for the event.

Slade duo Dave Hill and Don Powell confirm they will open the Slade Rooms at the new Little Civic in Wolverhampton

Feb 24 2010 by Steve Bradley, Birmingham Mail

BLACK Country rock heroes Don Powell and Dave Hill are to officially open a new venue named after their world famous band Slade.

And organisers say the group’s gregarious lead singer Noddy Holder is hoping to attend the launch of the Slade Rooms in Broad Street, Wolverhampton, on March 11. The venue is part of the new Little Civic.

But Civic Halls spokesman Jonn Penney has ruled out a full reunion of the original band at the event, as bassist and songwriter Jim Lea said he would be on holiday at the time.

Jonn said: “We are still waiting to hear back from Noddy Holder, but Dave and Don are definitely coming.

The tall tale of how teacher Taffy Thomas turned storytelling laureate
News | Published in The TES on 5 February, 2010 | By: Helen Ward

"..Two years travelling the country for yarn spinner who found his calling through post-stroke speech therapy

"when I left teaching," said Taffy Thomas, who was appointed this week as the UK's first storytelling laureate, "my headteacher told me, 'You are leaving teaching to work in education.' He was right - what I do as a storyteller is educational. You can't write a story unless you can tell a story and you can't tell a story unless you've heard a story."
...
But his first love was teaching.
...
"I had a really inspirational teacher at primary school in Somerset, a man called Gordon Rose. He's immortalised now in one of my stories.

"I did my teacher training at Dudley College of Education and then got a job teaching at Etheridge School in Bilston, which the members of Slade went to. Dave Hill (lead guitarist) ruined one of my lessons once by walking past the window just as I'd just got them all settled down."

Slade guitarist Dave Hill on new Facebook campaign for Noddy Holder to rejoin the band

SLADE star Dave Hill spoke about a new campaign for Noddy Holder to rejoin the group and said: ‘‘If he wants to come and sing with us, we’d be very happy.’’

The lead guitarist was responding to a growing Facebook group which is trying to persuade the charismatic frontman to get back together with his the chart-topping Black Country band.

Devoted fan Mark Taylor has attracted more than 1,000 members to his internet campaign – entitled We Want Noddy To Rejoin Slade – in just one month.

Dave, 63, initially played down the campaign by stating he believed he and the fun-loving group, minus Noddy and fellow songwriter Jim Lea, would continue with their current singer, Malcolm McNulty.

Interview with Don Powell - Slade by Steve Grantley

We had been thinking of including Slade drummer Don Powell in our Great British Drum Heroes section for some time. As Steve Grantley, drummer with Stiff Little Fingers and The Alarm, co-wrote a book titled Cum On Feel The Noize – The Story Of Slade for Carlton books a few years ago, he seemed the perfect person to interview the man himself. Steve agreed, so here we pass over to him to give us a brief overview of Don and Slade’s

enduring career.

________________________________________
Don Powell is the drummer with Slade, who are arguably the greatest glam rock band ever! Don was a working class boy playing local clubs and pubs when he first started with the band, but he went on to achieve huge chart success and all the fame, fortune and madness that goes with it. Slade became a ‘70’s phenomenon and one of Britain’s most successful pop acts of all time. Their good-time-vibe anthems and scarves-in-the-air sense of rock balladry has lasted them throughout their entire career and they’re still going strong.

Guitarist Dave Hill: 'Some Say That Christmas Isn't Christmas Without Slade'

    Ultimate Guitar 25.12.2009:

"Around Christmas, wherever you walk in the United Kingdom, whether it be through shops, pubs, clubs, it's extremely likely you'll hear the rocking tones of Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody". Even if you're at home, the radio and the television will at some point air the track - it's extremely difficult to miss in fact. But beneath all that lies something underrated and relatively unnoticed, and that's a group that has cut a slew of strong compositions, amounting to a weighty back catalogue. In fact, groups to have cited Slade as an influence include no lesser names than Kiss, Oasis, Cheap Trick, Quiet Riot, and James Blunt amongst many, many others.

On November 23rd, 2009, Universal Music issued the compilation "Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade Party Hits". Grouping in 1966 as a new version of the N' Betweens, vocalist Noddy Holder, guitarist Dave Hill, bassist Jim Lea and drummer Don Powell would revise their group name to Ambrose Slade, eventually shortening it to merely Slade. Throughout their career, Slade have accumulated twenty-three top twenty UK singles, a number that includes six number ones. In the early seventies, Slade were arguably the biggest group in the UK charts, notching up no less than eleven top five singles between 1971 and 1974 alone. "Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade Party Hits" includes many of the act's signature tunes, such as "Merry Xmas Everybody", "Coz I Luv You", "Mama Weer All Crazee Now", "C'mon Feel The Noize", and "Skweeze Me Pleeze Me".

    Slade

Rock Oldie Night - Smokie, Sweet, Slade

    Seewen

    Express & Star 01.01.2010:

"Noddy told to cum on feel noise of fan calls

Almost 350 people have joined a Facebook group entitled We Want Noddy Holder to Rejoin Slade. Die-hard fans are calling for Walsall-born Noddy to re-join original bandmates Jim Lea, Dave Hill and Don Powell for one last gig. Group founder Mark Taylor, of Shepherd’s Bush, London, describes Wolverhampton-based Slade as “one of the greatest live bands to ever come out of the UK”.

The campaign has only been going for four days and he predicts thousands will eventually add their name to it.

Postman Mr Taylor, aged 41, has been a Slade fan since he was five. He also writes for a music website in his spare time. “I’ve never seen them live but it would mean the world to me and many others to see them back together,” he said. Noddy has long retired from the music scene and was unavailable for comment today, while bassist Jim Lea has a solo career.
